Established in 1991, Saskarc Industries is an industry-leading custom metal fabricator, project management and equipment sales/rental company. We serve the oil and gas, power generation, mining, construction, government and petrochemical industries across North America.

Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing and Operations, the Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of processes and procedures to achieve a safe work practices within the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development or revision of policies, directives and necessary procedures for integrating the Safety Management System.
  • Ensures compliance with all health and safety regulations, and know of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization.
  • Responsible for preparing, maintaining, and updating health and safety policy and procedure manuals.
  • Review and report variances to established practices in the health and safety policy.
  • Develops and conducts shop inspections and audits as needed to Identify hazards, recommend preventative measures and corrective actions.
  • Maintain compliance and update ISNetworld, ComplyWorks and Avetta systems.
  • Participate, and lead where appropriate, monthly safety committee meetings.
  • Participate and support the investigation of accidents, incidents and near misses to establish the cause and recommend actions to prevent re-occurrence.
  • Maintain Saskarc’s Return to Work Program and inform key members, such as Management and Human Resources regarding updates of specific cases.
  • Oversee the implementation and maintenance of the Safety Management system.
  • Coordinate OHS education programs for the protection, improvement and maintenance of employees’ health and safety.
  • Ensure compliance by the company to OHS laws, regulations and standards and the application of these in the organization.
  • Assist in the planning stages of the project as required by the project manager to include reviewing user and or functional requirements.
  • Analyze incident and accident statistics and make recommendations to prevent a reoccurrence.
  • Ensure investigation and the root cause analysis for all safety related accidents and incidents
  • Lead training and development initiatives and facilitate EHS Orientation for new employees.
  • Performs workplace safety inspections to minimize unsafe work conditions and prevent incidents, and perform hazard identification, assessment and control measures.
  • Ensure there are effective emergency response procedures in place; available personnel are adequately trained; and the company is at an acceptable level of emergency preparedness.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of community college diploma/certificate;
  • Minimum completion of a post-secondary or diploma in a related field preferably in occupational Health and Safety and Management;
  • 5 years directly related experience or 8 years related manufacturing experience;
  • R.S.P (Certified, Registered, Safety, Practitioner), preferred;
  • Sound Knowledge of all relevant Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety regulations;
  • Familiarity of the manufacturing environment;
  • Experience designing and implementing health and safety training;
  • Experience conducting safety audits, inspections, documenting findings and implementing corrective actions as needed;
  • Highly skilled with computers, possessing an advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications;
  • Ability to multi-task projects, work within time constraints, and complete projects on time;
  • Must be able to write policies and procedures, technical reports, and correspondence as well as perform advanced math calculations and statistics;
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate complex and technical variables and communicate practical solutions;
  • Excellent communication skills; and
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
