Spacer Structure Module Fabrication

The Project:

In August 2012, Krupp Canada Inc. (Krupp) awarded a contract to Saskarc Industries Inc. (Saskarc) to fabricate 2 large modular buildings and 2 exterior column support frames with interconnecting braces, totalling 425 Tons of steel for Imperial Oil’s Kearl Expansion Project.

Saskarc’s scope included shop detailing, supply, fabrication, modularization of all steel, internal process piping, checker plate flooring, drain lines, platforms and stairs, insulation and lagging, transportation and lifting design, and transportation to site.

The Highlights:

  • The main columns and diagonal support braces were designed with Welded Wide Flange (WWF) Beams due to the weight they need to support. They had to be fabricated from heavy plate and were Submerge Arc Welded (SAW).
  • The structural material was designed utilizing 350 WT cold weather steel, charpy impact tested to Cat 4 (-45 C).
  • The Support Modules and Column Supports were designed to CSA W-59 clause 12 for cyclically loaded structures. All structural welds had to be CJP, and 100% Ultrasonic or Radiographic testing of all structural welds was required.
  • Distortion control procedures were developed and specific welding sequences had to be implemented to maintain the stringent dimensional criteria.

The result:

Saskarc overcame numerous fabrication and logistical challenges and delivered a quality product to their customer, while maintaining the highest level of safety and meeting the schedule requirements of the site.
